Blueberry photo Blueberry
Open containers to see the quality. Avoid withered and green fruits and favor fresh, plump berries with a powdery bloom. This lush berry is at its peak in midsummer.
Cucumber photo Cucumber
Select cucumbers that are firm, almost hard to the touch and plump and heavy for their size. The most common cucumber, medium size with dark green skin, is sold waxed to preserve its shelf life. A waxed cucumber, which cannot be pickled, has a shiny look and waxy feel.
Peach photo Peach
A peachy aroma indicates ripeness, as does softness; choose a peach that gives slightly to palm pressure. A red blush indicates variety and not ripeness. There are two main types of peaches, determined by whether the flesh clings to the pit (clingstone) or breaks free of it (free stone). There are also yellow- and white- fleshed varieties.
